A 'like' /'thank you' option?

#1 Post by Tahl »

I've noticed some websites have started giving members the option to 'like' a post or 'The following members say thanks for the post" type sub reply under a post. Facebook has a similiar option and I was wondering if we could get something here as often someone will post something helpfull and then there will be half a page of "nice post". I'm thinking in particular about the painting and modeling forum and in the General Warhammer forum.

So it could read something like
example wrote:Here's a picture of my new silverhelms
The following members like this post : X, Y, Z

Obviously I realise its Christmas etc but its just a suggestion thats certainly not time critical.

Can you provide a few links to sites that do this?

Basically, the chances of getting a feature like this, whilst slim in the first place, are made a lot better if it's a download and not something I have to code from scratch. If someone else is doing it on phpbb, I may just ask where they got the code, and take all the work out.

The main problem I see with this plan is it gives people the option of not commenting. To a certain extent, P+M is better for the activity it does get, and the new post notification that's generated through short "I like" messages, despite the fact they're technically spam (you may note that we very seldom stop that in P+M, while we would in OT). So oddly enough, it may be better for reducing spam in OT rather than P+M.

That's my $0.04 anyway (I know, it's usially $0.02, but I'm a lore and get double spending)

I am agianst such an "upgrade".

People should be encouraged to post their thoughts and to explain them. If we are striving to build a stronger comunity than "like" button is a wrong way to go. If you really like something, you should better give a short explanation why you like it or dislike it not just clicking a simple button.

I'm with Sun this would probably hurt the PandM section more than it hepls the site.

I agree completely.
As the eventual removal of the "Best Member of the Site" Competition proved, features that revolve around popularity are too easily manipulated by the mob and add little to the discussion. It is better to have a couple of good insightful posts or criticisms than a thousand opinions via a "like/dislike" option.

On reflection with what you guys are saying it probably could do some harm. The idea was just to remove the dozens of "ooo nice" type posts but it could just lead to a decreased 'proper' posts and so forth.

Uther the member awards were removed simply because of a lack of Finnie being here to do them. They were surprisingly fun and hard to win, most Ulthuan.net members are too long in the tooth for mob-mentality.

What were these awards that have been mentioned? I see Tahl won though from his signature.

I made the decision not to copy the member award pages across from the old forum, mainly because of the volume of work required for very little use.

However, they're still there: http://www.ulthuan.net/archive/ulthuan_awards.php

I'm with Gil on this one. I mean, sure, the like-button is a nice thing on Facebook and the like, but I like to be able to read why a person's views and opinions as to why they like a certain thing on this site. Especially on the P&M section :)

Really? Damn, I guess going to the chat to stay updated is not a good idea after all :D

Long story short we had a member "Finnie" who thought it would be a cool idea to have yearly 'awards'.He did all of the donkey work but each year there was a number of categories: Most helpful member, best painter, best story teller,a overall best member etc. It usually began with a nomination process followed by debate and then a vote. There winners got the award and mentioned on the page Sun pointed out. They were usually quite fun as there was a few joke categories (that didnt get in the awards page) such as "biggest spammer", "most argumentative member" etc.

Because of the somewhet complex nature of nomination-debate-final vote for each of the dozen categories when Finnie left there wasn't anyone really to carry the torch.

@Uther, never trust chat. That message should really be sentence one, page one on Ulthuan.net. :D

I like the feature, but I don't think it'd work on a forum like this. It works well on forums with a lot of active members, where debates could involve hundreds of people but instead end up being between a handful of people with "thanks" giving a kind of representative vote of approval from the rest of the board. Also good for links, stories, pictures, etc. but only I think when there are a lot of active members.
