I find shooting weak to be honest. Only time I've found it ok is when I've used Hand of Glory to increase BS. However just the presence of a RBT or archers does change how your opponent deploys. That can work to your advantage and that's why I always take 2-3 RBT's and some sea guard.

Just on the subject of mages though, when I cast from the 2nd rank do I measure from my mage? It's quite crucial because sometimes that small distance can be the difference.

It's just sometimes you get these mage killer fliers/cav that just dive in and direct it all on your mage. I use Death magic as well so I need to be dangerously close to the action.
